Looking into the bay from the neck of the Bukit

This panoramic Jimbaran Bay live cam, streamed by the Bali Weather Live Stream channel, watches the wide crescent of the bay from the narrow neck where the Bukit Peninsula joins the rest of Bali. The frame holds the west-facing cove, the fishing boats drawn up along the sand and, to the north, the runway of Ngurah Rai Airport reaching out into the sea. Jimbaran is a fishing village in the South Kuta district of Badung Regency, immediately south of the airport, which makes this a convenient vantage point for reading Bali weather as cloud and rain cross the bay.

A fishing village that became a resort

Fish still define Jimbaran. At the northern end of the bay, in Kedonganan, boats land their catch early in the morning for the fish market, and what is bought there is grilled at stalls close by. The line of seafood cafes along the beach made the village known: customers pick live seafood, and it is cooked over coconut-husk fires rather than charcoal. The 2005 Bali bombings targeted these beachside restaurants; the trade recovered over the following years. At the southern end of the cove, resorts such as the Four Seasons, InterContinental and Raffles occupy the slopes.

Sunsets and seasons

Because the bay faces due west, the sun sets into the sea all year round, with the clearest evenings in the dry season from April to October. During the wet season from November to March, cloud builds over the bay in the afternoon and usually empties in short, heavy showers. The shallow, sheltered water is calm compared with the ocean swell at Uluwatu on the peninsula's southern tip, so it suits swimming and paddling, while surfers head for the western cliffs.

Around the bay

A few kilometres from the airport, Jimbaran is often the first stop after landing. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue park stands on the Bukit plateau and Uluwatu Temple at the peninsula's end. Jalan Uluwatu, the main road south, and the bypass toward Kuta slow badly in the late afternoon, so anyone hoping to catch the sunset seen on this camera should set out well before it.
