Volcano and lake from the caldera rim

This Kintamani live cam, streamed by Arkaluna Resort on YouTube, looks from the southwestern ridge of the Batur caldera in Bali's highland interior down to the volcano and Lake Batur. Mount Batur, 1,717 metres high, rises about 700 metres from the caldera floor in the centre of the frame; the crescent-shaped lake lies to its right, and on clear days the cone of Mount Agung, Bali's highest peak, stands behind. Kintamani and the rim village of Penelokan sit above 1,000 metres, so the Bali weather up here is markedly cooler than on the coast.

Two calderas, one inside the other

Batur is Bali's most active volcano. The outer caldera, roughly 10 by 13 kilometres, formed when the magma chamber collapsed about 29,300 years ago; the inner one, about 7.5 kilometres across, followed around 20,150 years ago. The lake fills the southeastern part of the outer caldera and is slowly shrinking under sediment and water hyacinth. The first documented eruption came in 1804 and the most recent in 1999-2000; the black lava field of the 1963 eruption is plainly visible from Kintamani. Fifteen villages lie inside the caldera, among them Kedisan, Songan, Toya Bungkah and Trunyan, where the dead are laid out in the open rather than buried. Batur joined the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network on 20 September 2012.

The sunrise hour

The climb up Batur is considered easy, and most hikers leave in the dark to reach the summit before dawn. From the camera's side, the sun rises beside or behind Agung and fills the caldera with first light, which makes the minutes before dawn the best time to watch. By afternoon mist and cloud usually settle over the lake. Mornings are clearest in the dry season from April to October; in the wet months the wind on the ridge calls for warm layers.

Getting there

Kintamani is one to two hours by road from Ubud depending on traffic, longer from Denpasar. The roadside cafes at Penelokan open early. Hot springs lie at Toya Bungkah on the lakeshore, and Pura Ulun Danu Batur, one of Bali's most important temples and dedicated to the lake goddess Dewi Danu, stands near the caldera.
