Lake Salda live cam

Streamed from the lake's official website, this camera overlooks Lake Salda in the Yeşilova district of Burdur province, about 50 km west of the city of Burdur. Often nicknamed the "Turkish Maldives" for its turquoise water and white shores, the lake can be followed through this Lake Salda live webcam as the light and colours shift during the day.

A deep crater lake

Salda is a crater lake of roughly 44 square kilometres, lying at 1,316 metres above sea level. It reaches a depth of 196 metres, placing it among the deepest lakes in Turkey. The white beaches come from hydromagnesite, a mineral found in the shallow coastal waters. Black pine forest surrounds the shoreline, and seven small white islets rise from the water.

The Mars connection

NASA scientists have studied the lake's microbialites as part of the search for signs of past life on Mars. In 2021 the agency stated that the minerals and rock deposits at Salda are the closest match on Earth to those around Jezero Crater, where the Perseverance rover landed.

Protection rules

The lake was declared a Special Environmental Protection Area by presidential decree in March 2019 and is also a first-degree protected natural site. To stop the fragile hydromagnesite formations from being trampled, entering the water, swimming and using the beach in the White Islands (Beyaz Adalar) area were banned from autumn 2020. Other parts of the shore also carry no-swimming signs, so check local notices. Days can be hot but nights at this altitude turn cool, worth noting in the Lake Salda weather if you plan to camp.
