Run by the local group Muizenberg Wave Watchers, this camera looks over Muizenberg beach on Cape Town's False Bay coast and the surf break known as Surfer's Corner. It shows wave size, wind direction and how crowded the line-up is, which is why the Muizenberg live webcam is watched mostly by beginners booking lessons and renting boards.

Where South African surfing began

Muizenberg is a suburb on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula, about 25 kilometres south of central Cape Town. A wide, shallow beach, warmer water fed from the Indian Ocean side and long, forgiving waves made it the place where surfing in South Africa started; local histories trace the sport here to the early twentieth century and name Zimbabwe-born Heather Price as the first recorded stand-up surfer. The painted wooden changing huts along the sand go back to Victorian and Edwardian bathing rules, and residents campaigned to keep them when removal was proposed. On Main Road, Het Posthuys was built by the Dutch East India Company in 1673 as a lookout post and is now a small museum; a few minutes away, Rhodes Cottage, which Cecil Rhodes bought in 1899 and where he died in 1902, is also a museum.

Surf, seasons and shark spotters

The sea here is usable most days; the cleanest waves tend to come in the morning before the south-easter picks up, and in summer (December to February) that wind strengthens through the afternoon. Shark Spotters watch the water from Boyes Drive above the beach and signal with a flag system; the siren sounds only for a close sighting.

Getting there

The Southern Line commuter train from Cape Town station reaches the coast at Muizenberg and continues to Simon's Town. By car, take the M3 or the M4. For Muizenberg weather it helps to know that False Bay is usually calmer than the Atlantic side of the peninsula.
