Broadcast from the Sea Point district on Cape Town's Atlantic seaboard, this camera frames the coastal road, the seafront walkway and, behind them, the 669-metre peak of Lion's Head. At sunset the Sea Point live webcam shows the mountain's outline sharpening against the lights along the shore.
Sea Point is a narrow strip squeezed between Lion's Head and the Atlantic. The name is said to date from 1776, when a naval commander camped his crew here to avoid a smallpox outbreak in town. Today it is one of the most densely populated parts of Cape Town, known for the Promenade that runs from Mouille Point to Bantry Bay, roughly seven kilometres according to local sources. Runners, cyclists and families with children keep it busy from early morning until late evening, and the tidal pools at Sea Point Pavilion are the summer meeting place. At the northern end stand the Green Point lighthouse and the stadium built for the 2010 World Cup. The southern end leads on to Bantry Bay, the Clifton beaches and Camps Bay; because of the Benguela Current the water on this coast often stays between 12 and 16 degrees even in summer, and a strong south-easter can chill it further overnight.
The peak sits between Table Mountain and Signal Hill and was named Leeuwen Kop by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. The spiral path to the summit takes one to two hours, and full-moon hikes have become a local tradition. From the camera's angle the slopes turning orange at dusk and the cloud level above them are a practical guide to Cape Town weather.
MyCiTi buses stop frequently along Beach Road, and the city centre is three to four kilometres away. Winter (June to August) brings north-westerly storms that send waves over the sea wall; on summer afternoons the south-easter is felt less on this coast than elsewhere.
