Kīlauea, on the Island of Hawaiʻi within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, is a shield volcano known as one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Halemaʻumaʻu, the crater at its summit, is regarded in traditional Hawaiian belief as the home of Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes.

This camera from the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory looks into Halemaʻumaʻu from its western rim. Depending on the volcano's activity, you may see a lava lake, lava fountains or a completely quiet crater floor. During eruptive periods, night is the most spectacular time to watch, when the red glow of the lava lights up the crater.
