Kīlauea, on the Island of Hawaiʻi inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, is a shield volcano regarded as one of the most active in the world. Halemaʻumaʻu is the main crater within its summit caldera and in Hawaiian tradition is associated with Pele, the goddess of volcanoes. This official U.S. Geological Survey camera looks into the crater from the south.

During quiet periods the camera shows the crater floor, steep rock walls and drifting volcanic gas. When eruptions occur, lava fountains and lava lakes can be seen from this alternative angle. The glow of lava stands out most at night and around dusk; clouds and rain can limit visibility.
