Kīlauea on the Island of Hawaiʻi is a frequently active shield volcano known for its broad summit caldera and the Halemaʻumaʻu crater within it. The volcano lies inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and is closely monitored by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory of the U.S. Geological Survey.

This official USGS camera looks into Halemaʻumaʻu from the east. During eruptions, lava lakes, lava fountains and rising gas plumes may be visible, and at night the glow of lava becomes especially striking. In quieter periods the crater walls and floor can be watched, sometimes with steam drifting upward. Rain and cloud can occasionally reduce visibility.
