The Maiden's Tower rises from a tiny islet off Üsküdar, where the Bosphorus opens into the Sea of Marmara, and is one of Istanbul's most recognisable landmarks. Over the centuries it has served as a watchtower and lighthouse and inspired many legends.
This camera from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality shows the tower together with the busy shipping lane at the southern entrance of the strait, where commuter ferries, tankers and small boats pass constantly. On foggy mornings the tower almost disappears, while late afternoon brings the most popular sight: the sunset, followed by the tower's evening lights. Stormy days are dramatic too.
