On Highway 1, the Trans-Canada, the Douglas Road section in Burnaby lies just east of the Willingdon Avenue exit. This DriveBC camera looks eastbound, toward Burnaby Lake and the Fraser Valley.
Douglas Road was cut between 1862 and 1865 by the Royal Engineers based in New Westminster and named after Governor James Douglas. In 1926 it was linked to Grandview Road in Vancouver, and in 1968 its Burnaby and New Westminster sections were renamed Canada Way to mark the country's centennial.
The Vancouver-to-Surrey segment is the busiest part of Highway 1 in the Lower Mainland. Heading east, drivers pass the Sprott Street, Kensington Avenue/Canada Way and Gaglardi Way interchanges, the last leading up to Simon Fraser University, before the Port Mann Bridge carries the highway into Surrey. HOV lanes running east from Grandview Highway were added in 1998. Eastbound flow usually stiffens in the afternoon commute. On days with snow or heavy rain, this Burnaby live cam is worth reading together with the weather forecast.
