Spanning the Second Narrows of Burrard Inlet, the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge carries Highway 1, and this DriveBC camera looks along it southbound, with traffic leaving the North Shore for Vancouver and Burnaby. For commuters coming down from North Vancouver, the Ironworkers bridge live cam is a quick way to judge how full the crossing is in the morning.
On 17 June 1958, while the bridge was still being built, a span collapsed. Seventy-nine workers fell about 30 metres into the water, and 19 people died, including a rescue diver who drowned later. The crossing opened on 25 August 1960 and was renamed on 17 June 1994 to honour the ironworkers. It is a steel truss cantilever bridge 1,292 metres long with a 335-metre main span. The older Second Narrows Bridge beside it now carries only trains.
The six-lane bridge is the Trans-Canada Highway's link between the North Shore and the south side of the inlet, used by more than 130,000 vehicles a day as well as pedestrians and cyclists. Local reporting ranks it among the most congested crossings in the region, so the morning peak is when a look pays off most, and wet Vancouver weather tends to stretch the delays.
