In Vancouver's north-east corner, close to the Burnaby boundary, the Cassiar Tunnel is a short but important link on Highway 1. This DriveBC camera shows the tunnel section looking south, toward the freeway heading into Burnaby and the Fraser Valley.
Before the tunnel, the Trans-Canada Highway used part of Cassiar Street, where traffic lights at several intersections caused peak-hour congestion. The Cassiar Connector was promoted as removing one of the last remaining traffic lights on the highway. The 730 m tunnel opened to vehicles on 12 January 1992, a day after pedestrians were allowed to walk through it.
Northbound, the tunnel begins under Adanac Street, passes under the East Hastings Street interchange and ends under Triumph Street. The highway then reaches the McGill Street interchange and the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing to North Vancouver, opened in 1960. Slowdowns on the bridge often back up toward the tunnel, so conditions here are best read together with bridge traffic. In winter, this Cassiar Tunnel live cam is more useful alongside the Vancouver weather.
