The town sits in the valley of the Tortum Stream at an altitude quoted between 1,450 and 1,600 metres, on the D950 highway that links Erzurum with Artvin. Where Tortum is and what it is known for

The district centre lies roughly 52 to 55 kilometres from Erzurum, bordering Artvin's Yusufeli district to the north and Uzundere to the east. The town takes its name from the Tortum Stream, which flows on into the Çoruh River; on the hill above it stands Tortum Castle, a military post in the Saltukid period, while nearby villages hold the Church of the Virgin at Bağbaşı, better known as Haho, and the stone Kireçli Bridge. The region's real fame lies further north: Tortum Lake, dammed by a landslide, the 48-metre Tortum Waterfall at its outlet and the 10th-century Georgian church of Öşvank all fall within Uzundere, a separate district since 1987, yet visitors reach them along the same road that passes through Tortum.

Economy and food

Livelihoods rest on sheep and goat herding, summer migration to the high pastures, beekeeping and orchards on the valley floor, where apricots, walnuts, grapes and mulberries grow; mulberry molasses is a local product. Many of the cooks behind cağ kebab, the spit-roasted lamb that stands for Erzurum, come from Tortum, which has carried the town's name well beyond the district. Out-migration to the big cities is heavy, so summer, when families return, is the liveliest season in the centre.

Tortum weather and seasons

The district sits in the transition between Black Sea and continental climates: summers are mild and rainy, winters cold and snowy. Spring rains sometimes swell the Tortum Stream. Tortum weather is usually a few degrees milder than Erzurum, but snow and ice occur on the D950 in winter and drivers heading towards Artvin should expect narrow, winding stretches along the valley. October, when the valley trees change colour, is the most pleasant time to watch.
