About Palandöken

Ejder Peak, the highest point of the mountain at 3,176 metres, gives the resort its name. The piste network totals around 28 kilometres over 460 hectares, and the longest descent runs 12 kilometres with a vertical drop of 1,100 metres. The Ejder and Kapıkaya runs meet the dimensions required for slalom and giant slalom; the 2011 Winter Universiade and the 2017 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival were both held here. Darkness falls around four in the afternoon in winter, and several pistes are floodlit for night skiing. In 2023 the resort received international certification as a sustainable destination.

Season and snow conditions

Lifts here normally start turning in the first half of December and keep running to the end of April; on the higher runs the cover often survives into May. Palandöken snow conditions change quickly in winter, so it pays to check the camera together with the Erzurum weather forecast before setting out. Upper lifts may close on stormy days and fog can cut visibility; clear, sunny mornings after fresh snowfall are the best time both for skiing and for watching. In summer the same square serves as a starting point for walking routes as the slopes turn green.

Getting up from the city

The resort lies about 5 to 7 kilometres from the centre of Erzurum and around 15 kilometres from Erzurum Airport; most hotels arrange airport transfers, and municipal buses and taxis run regularly from town. The Palandöken road is salted and cleared in winter, but ice is common, so winter tyres and chains are advisable, and during heavy snowfall it is wiser to travel in daylight.
