Set at the Ejder summit, the highest point of Palandöken, this camera shows the top of the mountain and, in clear weather, the wide view north across the Erzurum plain. Published by Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality, the picture brings together the upper station at 3,176 metres, the start of the highest pistes and the city lying below the cloud. For anyone looking for a Palandöken live webcam, this is the most telling angle: snow line, cloud base and visibility are read here before anywhere else.

What the summit looks over

The Palandöken range runs east to west immediately south of Erzurum, and the Ejder peak at 3,176 metres is its highest point. To the north lies the city at roughly 1,900 metres and the plain around it, visible to the horizon on clear days. The 1,000-metre difference between the summit and the resort entrance at 2,200 metres is bridged by a single lift line and produces one of Türkiye's longest ski descents. On the same ridge's northern face begins the Ejder run, rated the steepest piste in the country; snowboard and freestyle events of the 2011 Winter Universiade took place on this mountain.

Wind and visibility

The summit is the most exposed point on the mountain and gets its harshest weather. Wind blows far harder than lower down on most days, snow drifts horizontally and when fog rolls in the camera can turn into a blank white screen within minutes. The most reliable clue to Palandöken weather is therefore whether the horizon and the city below can be made out in the summit view. Mornings are usually calmer; in the afternoon, cloud rising from the warming valley often closes the panorama.

Seasons and timing

The ski season runs from December to April, though snow on the summit can last into mid-May; in summer the same camera shows bare rocky ridges and slopes turning green. In the late afternoon, with the sun striking from the west, the snow turns orange and the lights of Erzurum begin to come on. Winter temperatures at the top can be close to ten degrees lower than in the city, so a calm-looking frame is deceptive; anyone heading up should be prepared for hard cold at the highest level.
