What the camera shows

This live feed from Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality looks onto Yakutiye Square, the busiest open space in the centre of Erzurum, and the surroundings of the Yakutiye Madrasa that gives the square its name. The square sits on Cumhuriyet Caddesi in the Yakutiye district, which is the administrative and commercial heart of the city. The Lala Mustafa Paşa Mosque stands right beside the madrasa, and the Grand Mosque, the Twin Minaret Madrasa and the castle with its clock tower are all a short walk away. For anyone searching for an Erzurum live webcam, this is the spot that best captures the everyday rhythm of the city centre.

The story of the Yakutiye Madrasa

The madrasa was commissioned in 1310 by Hoca Cemaleddin Yakut during the reign of the Ilkhanid ruler Öljaitü. With its enclosed courtyard and four iwans it is regarded as the largest example of this plan type in Anatolia. Reliefs of a tree of life, a double-headed eagle and facing lions flank the portal, while a cylindrical minaret with glazed brick patterns rises on the south side. The building served as a foundry in Ottoman times and as a military depot from the late nineteenth century. After several restorations beginning in 1964 it now houses the Museum of Turkish-Islamic Arts and Ethnography, with displays of Oltu stone craftwork and objects from traditional Erzurum households.

When to watch

Erzurum lies at roughly 1,900 metres, so the square stays cool for most of the year and remains under snow for long stretches of winter, when January averages are well below freezing. Snowfall at night, with the stone facade and the floodlit minaret in the frame, gives the camera some of its most memorable moments. The square fills during Ramadan evening events and on 23 July, when the city marks the anniversary of the 1919 Erzurum Congress. Checking the Erzurum weather alongside the camera before a trip helps with packing for icy pavements.

Getting there

Taxis and municipal buses connect the square with the intercity bus terminal and Erzurum Airport within a short ride. Restaurants serving cağ kebab, the city's signature dish, and pastry shops making kadayıf dolması cluster in the surrounding streets. Erzurum station, a stop on the Eastern Express line to Kars, is also close to the centre, making the madrasa a natural first stop for rail travellers.
