The city's meeting point

Havuzbaşı is the name of the wide square with a pool in front of the Atatürk Monument in Yakutiye, the central district of Erzurum, and the camera that Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality keeps here shows the square and the pedestrian movement around it. Official ceremonies, including the 12 March liberation day and the 19 May youth celebrations, start from this spot. With its pool of about 3,500 square metres and a strip of greenery around it, the square works as the open-air living room of the city centre. Parades usually set off from Havuzbaşı City Square and move towards Yakutiye City Square in front of the Yakutiye Madrasa.

How Havuzbaşı became the centre

The modern centre of Erzurum was shaped largely by planning in the early years of the Republic. The Lambert plan of 1938 shifted the city's centre of gravity westwards to the Havuzbaşı junction, and boulevards, parks and public buildings gathered around it in the decades that followed. Banks, hotels and the cafes of Cumhuriyet Caddesi now line the square. Shoppers, people coming into town for cağ kebab and skiers returning from Palandöken all tend to pass through here.

Seasons and viewing hours

At roughly 1,900 metres the city has a long winter; from December to March the pool area is mostly under snow and nights below minus twenty are not unusual. On summer evenings the cool air draws people out, and the square is at its fullest after sunset. Travel tips

Erzurum Airport is about 10 kilometres from the centre, and airport shuttles terminate downtown. Erzurum railway station and the intercity bus terminal are a short taxi ride from the square. Icy pavements in winter call for shoes with good grip and heavy clothing; the road up to Palandöken Ski Resort branches off southwards from this part of town.
