Between Bishopstown and Wilton, the Bandon Road Interchange (J3) is where the N40 meets the N71 to West Cork. This TII camera looks east from here towards Sarsfield Road and the Kinsale Road. Much of the traffic coming in from the western half of County Cork joins the ring road at this point.

Gateway to West Cork

The N71 runs through Bandon and Skibbereen to the West Cork coast, and J3 also gives access to Bishopstown and, via the R849, to Wilton. The N40 between J3 and J6 opened in 1995, while the J1 to J3 section to the west, completed in 2004, linked the ring road with the Ballincollig bypass.

A flyover replaces the roundabout

Once the Kinsale Road flyover opened in 2006, the queues moved west and the Bandon Road roundabout became a serious bottleneck. On 12 March 2010 the National Roads Authority confirmed flyovers here and at Sarsfield Road; full construction began on 6 July 2011 and finished in July 2013, creating an unbroken dual carriageway from west of Ballincollig to Dunkettle.
