On the north bank of the River Lee, between Glanmire and Little Island, the Dunkettle Interchange is where the M8 to Dublin, the N25 to Waterford, the N40 South Ring Road and the N8 into the city meet. This TII camera watches the N25 side of the junction.
The junction opened in 1992 as a three-arm roundabout built with the Glanmire bypass. In 1999 a fourth arm down to the Jack Lynch Tunnel was added along with a flyover and slip roads for Little Island, and traffic lights followed in 2006. It was still judged unfit for purpose; an upgrade was approved in 2013 and the main contract went to John Sisk & Son in October 2020. The €215 million free-flow interchange was completed on 12 February 2024, when its last two link roads opened. The scheme added 18 new links totalling 10 kilometres, seven new bridges, a bridge over the Cork–Midleton railway and 2.9 kilometres of walking and cycling paths.
On the busiest days close to 120,000 vehicles approach the junction. Since the opening, peak journey times through it have fallen by almost half on average, and by nearly 60 per cent from the N40 to the N25. The Dunkettle live webcam is a good check before joining the motorway to Dublin or heading east to Midleton.
