About 3 kilometres south of Cork city centre, the Kinsale Road Interchange (J6) is where the N40 crosses the N27 to the airport and Kinsale. This TII camera looks east along the ring road towards Douglas and the Jack Lynch Tunnel.
The junction opened in 1990, as the South Ring Road was built in phases, as a five-arm signalised roundabout. When the Jack Lynch Tunnel opened in 1999, traffic on the N40 grew and delays worsened. By 2006 about 100,000 vehicles a day used the junction, and the straight east-west movement was the busiest. Work started in mid-2005 on a flyover carrying the N40 over the roundabout, and it opened on 4 August 2006, six months ahead of schedule. The scheme, around 2.5 kilometres long, cost €55 million and has three eastbound lanes, two westbound lanes and four slip roads.
From here the N27 heads north into the city centre and south to Cork Airport and Kinsale, while J6 also serves Togher, Turner's Cross and the Black Ash park and ride. This Kinsale Road live webcam is handy for a look at the airport road before a flight.
