South of Wilton, junction 4 of the N40 at Sarsfield Road is the ring road exit closest to Cork University Hospital. This TII camera shows the eastbound lanes running from the junction towards Togher and the Kinsale Road.

The hospital junction

J4 connects via the R641 with Wilton and Doughcloyne, and J5 for Togher follows just to the east. Because ambulances heading to Cork University Hospital use this stretch, engineers worked with the emergency services during the rebuild to keep them from being held up.

One contract, two flyovers

After the Kinsale Road flyover opened, the Sarsfield Road and Bandon Road roundabouts became the city's new bottlenecks. Preliminary work began in 2008, and a single contract with BAM covered two flyovers, about eight kilometres of dual carriageway and link roads, pedestrian and cycle facilities, and the removal of two old footbridges. Estimated at around €100 million and expected to save drivers at least 30 minutes at peak times, the work was finished in July 2013.
