The Jack Lynch Tunnel carries the N40 under the River Lee, linking Dunkettle on the north bank with Mahon on the south. This TII camera shows the tunnel section in the southbound direction, with traffic heading for Mahon, Douglas and Cork Airport.
Opened on 21 May 1999, the tunnel is named after Jack Lynch, the Cork-born former Taoiseach. The Dunkettle crossing was chosen over a route at Tivoli. Its 610-metre river section was built from five reinforced concrete elements cast in a basin at Mahon and then floated out and sunk into place; with its approaches the roadway runs to 1.8 kilometres. Two bores with two lanes each flank a central emergency passage. Including the feeder roads, the scheme cost IR£105 million.
A toll proposed in the feasibility study was dropped after political opposition, so the crossing is free. Daily traffic grew from about 40,000 vehicles in 2005 to 63,000 in 2016. Pedestrians and cyclists are barred, and vehicles are limited to 4.65 metres in height. Because maintenance can close one bore and run two-way traffic in the other, this Jack Lynch Tunnel live cam is also worth checking before a late-night drive across Cork.
