This camera faces west over the Bloomfield Interchange, junction 9 of the N40 South Ring Road between Douglas and Mahon. It is operated by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), and the westbound lanes it shows carry traffic from the Jack Lynch Tunnel towards Douglas, the Kinsale Road and Ballincollig.
Junction 9 is where the N28 branches off for Rochestown, Carrigaline and Ringaskiddy, so heavy goods vehicles bound for the Port of Cork's terminals at Ringaskiddy pass through here. TII says the existing N28 was not designed for current traffic volumes. The government-approved M28 project, costing about €456 million, provides roughly 11 kilometres of motorway from Bloomfield to Barnahely plus a 1.5-kilometre link to the eastern side of Ringaskiddy, and is meant to let port activity move out of Tivoli in the city.
One junction east, J10 serves Mahon and Blackrock; to the west, J8 and J7 serve Douglas. The section between J7 and J9 opened in 1992. This Bloomfield live cam is a sensible first look at N40 traffic before heading for the port or into Douglas.
