Eyüp Sultan Mosque live cam

A complex founded by Mehmed II

Five years after the conquest of Constantinople, Sultan Mehmed II built a mosque complex here in 1458. It stands beside the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad who is believed to have died here during the first Arab siege of the city. Most of the present building was rebuilt on the orders of Selim III and completed in 1800.

Girding of the sword and living traditions

In Ottoman times, new sultans came here to be girded with the Sword of Osman at the start of their reigns. The site remains one of Istanbul's most visited places of pilgrimage: families bring boys dressed for their circumcision ceremonies, and many people come to break their fast here during Ramadan. Holy nights, Eid holidays and Ramadan evenings are therefore the busiest times.

Cemetery and Golden Horn views

Behind the mosque, Eyüp Cemetery climbs the hillside; dating back to the 15th century, it is one of the oldest Muslim cemeteries in Istanbul and holds the graves of many Ottoman statesmen and scholars. At the top, Pierre Loti Hill offers one of the finest views over the Golden Horn and can be reached on foot or by cable car.

Arriving by Golden Horn ferry is a pleasant way to see the historic waterfront. Summer days on the square can be hot and winter brings rain, so check the Istanbul weather before you go.
