Taksim Square in Beyoğlu is one of Istanbul's best-known meeting points. Its centrepiece is the Republic Monument, and right next to it begins İstiklal Avenue, the busy pedestrian street with its historic red tram that leads down towards Galata. The Atatürk Cultural Center also stands on the edge of the square.
