This DriveBC camera, run by the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit, watches Highway 99 where it meets Westminster Highway in Richmond, pointed south towards the George Massey Tunnel. As a Richmond live webcam it covers one of the busiest stretches of the main freeway between Vancouver and the US border.

A freeway across Lulu Island

Most of Richmond sits on Lulu Island, and Highway 99 crosses it from north to south. The Oak Street Bridge carries it into Vancouver; southwards it dips under the Fraser River and runs through Delta and Surrey to the Peace Arch crossing, where it becomes Interstate 5. Exit 36 at Westminster Highway works only as a northbound exit and a southbound on-ramp, so this is where traffic from the island's east-west arterial joins the southbound flow.

The tunnel bottleneck

What really shapes traffic here is the four-lane George Massey Tunnel, opened in 1959, with one lane that switches direction on a schedule. Under the Highway 99 Tunnel Program an eight-lane, toll-free immersed-tube tunnel is being built to replace it, with opening planned for 2031; the rebuilt Steveston interchange was finished in 2025. Check conditions before the afternoon peak, and in the wet months keep an eye on the weather, since rain and low cloud can cut visibility.
